I understand from your post that your Mac will not complete the installation, and you're unable to find a startup disk. To get started I suggest that you boot your computer into recovery mode by following the directions below, and try to reinstall Mac OS X.
Are you reinstalling Apple Mac OS X in your old laptop but getting error 'OS X could not be installed on your computer' and message appear 'No packages were. Unfortunately, Yosemite kept booting into a lo res mode. Now plan to try and insttall El Capitan. I'll post about that in the El Capitan. Jun 21, 2016 Installing El Capiton on an old Mac Book Pro today, I received the error: OS X could not be installed on your computer. No packages were eligible for install.
Reinstall OS X from Recovery

If have a recent Mac, you can use OS X Recovery to reinstall OS X.
- Turn on your Mac.
- Immediately after you hear the startup sound, hold the Command and R keys on your keyboard.
- Release the keys after the Apple logo appears.
- If prompted, select a Wi-Fi network, or connect your Mac to the Internet using an Ethernet cable.
- After the Recovery menu appears, select the option to Install OS X.
- Follow the onscreen prompts to select your destination disk and install OS X.
